Those who tell the story of this city say that its founder was Byzas, son of the god Poseidon, sovereign of the seas, and the beautiful Keroessa. Historians, on the other hand, know that the firs inhabitants of Istanbul made their home in Yarımburgaz Cave on the banks of Lake Küçük Çekmece around 300.000 years ago Byzantium became part of first the Roman and then the Byzantine empires, and on the morning of 29 May 1453 was taken by the Turkish army led by Sultan Mehmed II. With his conquest of Constantinople Mehmed II went down in history as Mehmed the Conqueror. The city became capital of the Ottoman Empire and was renamed Istanbul.Ottoman Empire began to rise on the Byzantine infrastructure, in a process that went on for centuries. Seeing Ottoman Istanbul of the nineteenth century through photographs is to witness the culmination of that process.
