The river god lives at the confluence of three great rivers, whose waters flow exuberantly. In the area where the Hebros (Meriç) meets the Tonzos (Tunca) and forms a broad curve was the city of Odrysai, a commercial centre and settlement of the Odrys, most renowned of the Thracian tribes. Odrysai's position on the transit route between Asia Minor and Europe meant that it was a frequent target of invasions. Under the Romans it became one of the most important cities of the empire, and was renamed Hadrianopolis after the Emperor Hadrian. In July 1362 during the reign of Murad I, Hadrianopolis fell into Turkish hands. Its name ise recorded as Edirne in contemporary documents referring to the victory. A new chapter began in the history of Edirne, which in 1365 became capital of the Ottoman Empireeeded Edirne as capital, the city did not lose its importance.
