It is by their external appearance that we know other people, the environment, mountains, rivers, cities, streets and houses. Even the things closest to us we know only from the outside. In everyday life, this is the only means of perceiving the material world. The history of art and architecture begins with visual memories, while historians, archaeologists and scholars follow this up by revealing the content in greater detail. In declaring that "arcitecture is an art that affects us directly" Geoffrey Scott wished to stress the importance of our relationship with visual phenomena. This is an approach in no way incompatible with the practical nature of Turkish culture.
